Nobody does television like Love Island USA
Plus Reese Witherspoon's new media brand for Gen Z, how to survive the New York heat wave, and more
Welcome to The Bullet: a Get Rec’d column that rounds up all the latest consumer news, including product drops, fashion team-ups, film launches, entertainment happenings, niche Internet news, and more.
Reese Witherspoon launches Gen Z-focused media brand, Sunnie. Aside from Teen Vogue, there’s been a gap in the market for teen-focused media that isn’t TikTok ever since Tavi Gevinson shuttered Rookie in 2018. Could Witherspoon and Sunnie rejuvenate teen media, or will it reveal the Gen Z and Alpha brains as officially cooked by the TikTok algo?
We’re all drinking from the Love Island USA season 7 firehose. Three weeks in, I think it’s safe to say the USA franchise of the popular reality dating show has officially proven that last season was not a fluke—American Love Island can compete against its heavyweight predecessor Love Island U.K., and any dating show for that matter. It’s admittedly difficult to keep up with an episode of television almost every single night, so I’ve been pretty religiously listening to the Love To See It podcast. I always love hearing how hosts Emma Gray and Claire Fallon break down episodes of The Bachelor, weaving in their own astute observations and insights, and their ruminations on Love Island USA are no different.
Haim released their fourth studio album, “I Quit,” and crowned three new Internet boyfriends. On the same day as their album release, the sister band also dropped the music video to their song “All over me,” which stars actors Archie Madekwe (Saltburn), Nabhaan Rizwan (The Last Letter to Your Lover, 1917), and Will Poulter (The Bear, Warfare).

Who tf is gonna be on Summer House this season? Last week, Summer House newcomer Imrul Hassan announced his departure from the reality in an Instagram story that sounded weirdly like a Yelp review. This means we’re down three Summer House stars—Imrul, second newcomer Lexi Wood, and Paige DeSorbo. Long-time star and recent mom, Lindsay Hubbard, stated on Instagram she would return to the show, so maybe one new star in the summer house will be her months-old baby? Still, that’s two new cast members who are leaving as swiftly as they arrived, which begs a question of retention on the show. DeSorbo’s departure in particular means the show’s got something to prove with this upcoming season. Summer House remains an ensemble cast—but over the years, DeSorbo established herself as a major pillar of the show. Even when DeSorbo wasn’t the star of the season, she shone. As the start of filming quickly approaches, who will fill that dark gap now? Personally I’m excited to potentially see more of Ciara Miller, especially after her appearance as Brantley in the season finale, but does Bravo also have plans to cast a Paige 2.0?
In case you missed it, Vanity Fair named a new editor-in-chief. Mark Giuducci previously served as the creative editorial director at Vogue—another imprint owned by Condé Nast, which also publishes Vanity Fair.
Live in New York and have plans to leave your house in the coming days? Don’t! (Unless you’re voting in the New York City mayoral primary!) There’s a heat wave a brewing, which can only mean one thing: a text notification from Con Ed kindly requesting that we all pretty please not run our ACs too much :) As much as I love strolling in the warmth of summer, every season I find myself in the sartorial dilemma of balancing aesthetics and the desire to look nice with the functional need to stay cool. I found this recent summer-focused newsletter from What Should I Wear? especially helpful in offering guidance and inspiration. Happy heat wave folks (and don’t forget to vote).
